Lodgment of an Application for Citizenship by Descent
Preparing the application
Delays can be avoided if applications contain all of the required documentation.

Please note that original documents must be provided. These will be returned to you once the application is finalised.
Additional requirements for applications lodged in New Delhi
In addition to the documentation requirements above, please provide the following documents:

Your child’s birth certificate in the name order which you would like to appear on the citizenship certificate. Please note:
- We are required to grant citizenship using the name order that appears on the birth certificate, NOT the name order that is provided on the application form.
- If the name on the birth certificate does not match the name you give on the form 118, you should consider obtaining an amended birth certificate BEFORE you lodge your application.
- Any Australian passport that is subsequently issued will follow the name order given on the Citizenship certificate.

Certified/notarised copies of both parents’ passport name pages.

If either parent of the applicant holds an Indian passport – A letter from the non-Australian parent stating that he/she does not have any objection to the applicant acquiring Australian Citizenship.

Original pre-natal records for duration of pregnancy and birth records. This may include ultra-sound records, doctor's certificates, hospital records, hospital discharge certificate.

If artificial conception procedures were used in relation to the child – Evidence of the relationship of the two parents such as original marriage certificate or evidence of de facto relationship.

A completed statutory declaration or affidavit from each parent. Any parent in Australia must complete a statutory declaration. Any parent in India must complete an affidavit. You must use the forms below which can be downloaded and printed. The affidavit must have an INR20 notary stamp affixed and be witnessed by two people and notarised by a Notary Public. The statutory declaration must be witnessed by one of the persons on the statutory declaration signatory list below.

You must pay the Indian rupee equivalent by bank demand draft only, drawn in favour of 'Australian High Commission' and payable at 'New Delhi'.
