How to Apply for a Visa
The below ‘How to Apply’ checklists have been provided to assist applicants in completing the visa application process. Please thoroughly read the relevant checklist before lodging your application.

Lodgement
Some applications must be lodged online or by mail to processing centres in Australia. Please refer to the website: www.immi.gov.au .
At an Australian Visa Application Centre (VFS Global)
A service delivery partner has been appointed to collect visa applications on behalf of the Australian High Commission Visa Office in New Delhi. Visa applications from all states in India and Nepal can be lodged at VFS Global Service visa application centres.
Applicants who have been granted a visa by a processing centre in Australia and advised to submit their passports for insertion of a visa label can also lodge their passports at the VFS visa application centres.
VFS visa application centres are open from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. A VFS services fee is charged for each application or passport submitted.
Applicants who lodged their visa applications through VFS may track the location of their passports on line through the visa website.

In Person at the Australian High Commission
Alternatively, clients may seek an appointment to lodge applications at the Visa and Citizenship Section of the Australian High Commission, New Delhi. From 3 March 2008, clients will not be admitted to the Australian High Commission without a prior appointment.
Appointments are required at the Australian High Commission for:
• lodgement of visa and Australian citizenship applications
• submitting outstanding documentation
• collection of visa/citizenship decisions
• placement of visa labels in passports
• general enquiries
Appointments can be made by:

• telephone +011 4122 1000 (ext 350) (please call between 09:00-11:00; or 15:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday).
If e-mailing us, you will need to include your name and passport number and the purpose of your appointment. You may include a telephone contact number if you wish.
For persons wishing to make an appointment to lodge an application, please ensure your application is complete and that you have all the necessary documentation. Forms and information about visas for Australia are available from our website at www.immi.gov.au. Incomplete applications may result in longer processing times.
For persons wishing make an appointment to submit a passport for evidencing of a visa label into their passport, please ensure that you have a blank page in your passport and the passport itself is not damaged.
When making an appointment please advise the appointments officer of any special needs you may have. Please also advise your full name and the names of any other persons in your group applying, dates of birth and passport numbers.

Incomplete applications
Under the Migration Act 1958 applications may be decided on the basis of available information. It assists the Visa Office to process applications more quickly if applications are as complete as possible and all supporting documentation is provided at the time of lodgement.
Fraud or misrepresentation
Applicants should answer all questions fully and truthfully and disclose any information relevant to the question.
Certification of documentation
All personal documents such as Birth Certificates, Household Registration Book, Curriculum Vitae, etc. must be certified by the relevant local authorities. “Certified copies” are copies authorised or stamped as being true copies of originals, by a person or agency recognised by the laws of the person’s home country.
Translation of documentation
Documents not in English should be accompanied by an English translation. In Australia, translators must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Evidence of relationship, such as personal letters, do not need to be translated.
Using a migration agent
You are not required to use a migration agent. However, if you intend to use a migration agent, you are advised to use a registered migration agent. A list of registered migration agents is available from the Migration Agents Registration Authority website. You can authorise a migration agent to act on your behalf by completing and lodging Form 956 - Appointment of Migration Agent, which can be downloaded free of charge from the DIAC website.
