Australia-India Strategic Knowledge Partnership
Australia and India have instituted a program of close cooperation on education, training and research.
A Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Education and Training between Australia and India was signed in 2003. Since 2009, our Education Ministers have agreed to meet annually for the Australia-India Ministerial Dialogue on Education Cooperation.
In April 2010, the then Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Julia Gillard, and India’s then Minister for Human Resource Development, Hon Kapil Sibal, signed a Joint Ministerial Statement to expand knowledge partnerships across all sectors – schools, vocational and higher education.
On 1 August 2011, the Australian Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, Senator the Hon Christopher Evans, and the then Indian Minister of Human Resource Development, Hon Kapil Sibal, launched the Australia-India Education Links website to support education and training collaboration between Australia and India and feature key government initiatives. The AIEC is a ‘working council’ of representatives from government, academia and industry. The AIEC provides a forum for members to collaborate with Ministers in deciding major bilateral education priorities for the coming year.
The inaugural meeting of the AIEC was held in New Delhi in August 2011.
